The story behind the art
I often plant sunflowers for towering blooms in the Summer. They take on a characters of their own once they start to wilt and dry, looking wobbly and boozy in their last moments standing tall. Their heads get bigger and burst with next years seeds, their necks slim and delicate.
Thought to be a Greek maiden who watched Apollo lovingly as he passed overhead from East to West in his firey chariot, she got turned into a sunflower after he became fed up with her gaze and foolishness.
Created to celebrate the beginning of Spring for my solo exhibition at Le Pinardier, Deal, Kent, Spring 2024.
